Every allotment should have a solid supply of lettuce as it is fast-maturing, undemanding and requires very little space. Lettuce comes in an large variety of types, shapes and sizes and is rarely fussy about soil types - although it likes to be kept watered.

Beetroot provides a tasty ingredient in salads, stews and soups. It likes well-drained, fertile soil although tolerant of most soil types. It definitely doesn't like recently manured soil, which causes the beetroots to become mis-shapen

Potatoes - planting

Poatoes will grow in most types of soil as long as it is well dug and clear of big lumps and stones. There are hundreds of different varieties offering different tastes, shapes and sizes as well as two main season types: Earlies and Maincrops. So choose carefully.

Broad beans - planting

Broad beans are very easy to grow, and are delicious when eaten young and tender. The first pick of the year, tossed in butter, is wonderful. Broad beans thrive in well-manurered soil but will tolerate almost any kind of soil as long as it is not water-logged.
