Best Practise For Supporting Peas Please
Ok, every year I try a different way of supporting my peas, but am yet to master the art. How does everyone support their peas? Any good tips would be most appreciated.
Kind Regards
Hayley
hello i grow about 4 rows of peas every year and i use 30ft long rows of wire netting across my allotment ,put about three long bamboo canes thru the wire at an angle then the pods hang away from the wire making it easy to pick them happy gardening bob
Hello Hayley and others
Let me just say there are many ways to succeed with peas they will grow in any good soil that has had a good dressing of lime
I set them off in cell trays 4 to a cell so thats 48 peas to a tray and 2 trays to a seed tray When they are about 1ins. high plant them out in a row and cover with wire mesh to keep off birds When they are about 6 ins high remove the wire mesh and insert twiggy sticks to give some support. When I run out of peasticks bits of cane or wood are inserted either side the row then run lengths of string right along the row starting just a few ins. from the soil about every 4-6ins apart right up the sticks to the height the peas are supposed to grow. Where you are limited for space grow Alderman peas up a net With good cultivation they can reach 6ft. or more
Happy gardening

PS When peas come into flower spray with a good insecticide mixed with horticultural soft soap and your peas should be grub free
hello
Thanks for the advise. I usually do well with growing them it's just keeping them weed free and the harvesting I have problems with. Does anyone have to net their peas? The Pigeons eat ours, anyway I get in a right muddle.
I have just come back from poundland and spotted in there extendable rivetted trelis, which stretches out quite far, so I think I will have a go at that, but will certaining take on board some of your tips.
Thanks you
Hayley
We've just bought off Ebay some green plastic temporary fencing which we are going to grow our peas up this year. Hopefully, it will work well.

when i had my old site in Reading i had 4 x 1 metre posts in the ground, then put strong wires top & bottom then hung cheap rolls of netting (£ shop) over the wires & used old sandwich bag ties to secure it, had great eas growing up that way.
