Brussell sprouts
I am about to start a community allotment project but the site is not finished for another 6 weeks when the growing season finishes. I have schools and resident groups involved so would like to grow winter veg especially sprouts and potatoes as I have never done this before I am after advice and any helpful tips.
Preferably veg for christmas dinners. Please help.......
You need to act quickly if you want to grow plants from seed this year.
I have had a lot of success with a variety called Brilliant which is an F1.
You get about 40 seeds in a packet
I would suggest that you sow NOW as individual seeds in compost in 2-3" pots and give them daily attention for watering once they are germinated and transplant out at about 15in pitch when they are about 5in high in the pots.
Don't allow them to get too hot and keep shaded to start with.
Whitefly
Does anyone have a good way of keeping Sprouts, and other greens for that matter, free from whitefly? (preferably organic).
Although the crop is reasonably unharmed the appearance of the outside leaves is blackened (presumably by their deposits) and they lose some of their visual appeal.
We all know that when this crop is grown commercially that there most be several chemical sprays applied in order to keep the outside leaves looking good when in the shops.
As soon as small buttons start forming spray with horticultural soft soap about once a month, more often if it rains a lot. The soft soap should be available from your Association shop If not just google horticultural soft soap.
I do not use washing up liquid as it contains things other than soap.
Soft soap is also ideal to mix with weedkillers and insecticides because it makes the spray stick to the leaves
Happy gardening
