Hi, can anyone tell me why last year/ the second year of growing carrots,
why I always seam to get my carrots forked. sorry about the spelling, not very good at it.
The first year all of them were forked,
the second year some one told me to mix half compost half sand, and grow them in that, only a few were forked,
I would like to say that this year none were forked.
HELP!!!!!!

forked carrots

hi gilly. bob here from west hull site .i had the same trouble with my first couple of years growing carrots most were forked and some had 4/5/6 twisted legs so i tried a lge box with half manure half compost/sand same results but also got a few nice roots then found info about too much manure = extra rich soil which causes them to fork so last yr i never used any and got my best ever crop so this yr im trying raised beds for carrots and celery with a good portion of sand and fine grit mxd in .hope this helps you out bet wishes bob

Carrots

I would normally use the soil within large containers for three years, leaving them open to the elements throughout the winter months. Early spring add some gritsand and Blood Fish & Bone, warm the soil up by placing glass on top of the containers & plant.

Do NOT/NEVER place any manure into the containers or they will fork badly.

I use 1200 x 600 x 750mm high box's and line with plastic sheeting, after planting cover young plants with a mesh , to keep the carrot fly at bay.

Hope this helps.
