Chitting potatoes
I have just recently taken over an allotment and and looking to plant some potatoes mid march.
the potatoes are currently chitting on my window seal. This is the first time I have attempted this and am looking for some advice.
I read on one site that you should rub off all the sprouts excepts one to make this one remaining the strongest. My potatoes currently have several shoots which are about 1cm long.
Should I rub some off or just leave them to it?
Also the potatoes are getting a little soft should I mist them with water?
Thanks
Dan
hi,not sure about rubbing out shouts, but make sure there not too warm.in a shed window is good,or an unheated room.regards
Keep them in a cool, light area, dont rub any shoots off the more dominant shoots will grow away and certainly dont water in any way, as this will bring in fungal infections on your potatoes. the potato tubers should contain enough food for the shoots to continue growing till ready to plant.
