Christmas
Hello everybody (hope I'm not just posting to myself).
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a very successful growing season for 2012
On our site at Bolsover in Derbyshire the seeds have arrived from E.W. KING's and we sall be opening the shop on Saturday to allocate the orders. Our potatoes come from elsewhere and are due in sometime in January.
A pal of mine has persuaded me to have a go at growing a few things for one or two local shows.
I've prepared one bean row by trenching down to the subsoil then loosened it up with a fork added 20 bags of rotted hoss muck then covered with a layer of soil and add bone meal at 5ozs to the yard run. As it sinks rake over more soil then leave it till March
I shall prepare my sweet pea row in basically the same way
The Hative-de-Niort shallots which I got from Dobies will be planted up in 31/2 ins
pots late in December and started into growth in the cold greenhouse
I'm very disappointed with my maincrop onions they are big and looked superb when I strung them up in the shed but when you cut into one they are starting to rot so I intend to grow more shallots and less onions
For Christmas dinner we will be having a turkey butterfly with Arran Pilot spuds which have been buried in a plastic box in the garden and with fresh picked sprouts. followed with apple pie made with apples from the garden which have been stored in the garage all washed down with a bottle of home made black currant wine. Looking forward to next season and helping to solve your queries and problems
Happy gardening
