Club root and composts
Has anyone else experienced problems of club root on brassicas when using proprietary composts for bring on seedlings?
Attached are some photos taken of plants at planting-out time grown solely in compost from a well-known company trading under a name that rhymes with flowers.
Having complained to the company whose response predictably was it cannot be as our composting technique is at a high enough temperature to kill the club root. However we have never had club root before and don’t import plants from other sources. We know that companies are using increasing higher proportions of compost made from household green waste and we have all seen what is put out for collection.
You have been warned.
Hello
From your photograph the club root looks quite big.
If you grow brassicas on the same ground year after year and don't dress it with plenty of lime you will inevitably finish up with club root. You are not safe from clubroot by growing your young plants in compost if you do not rotate the site and make sure the brassica area is well limed
Can I just say that I would never use any compost that I thought might have the contents of my green bin mixed with it no matter how well it was sterillised.
Happy gardening
