Complete beginer and no idea
Hi all i've just managed to get a plot 68" x 25". The council ave just bulldozed the waste land to create more plots, I do work but get up there every night for an hour weather permitting and on weekends. It will take a couple of weeks to remove roots, tree trunks andsort out the boggy ground in one corner.I have decided to start with a section so i can start planting. I'm lucky enough to have a friend that has a horse and has plenty of rotted manure. The only thing is my gardening skills are very limited and my fingers are not green yet. Please could i have some advice on what i can and can't plant, as the taste of real farm veg has got my hooked.
Thanks Markymark
Hi Markymark and welcome to down the allotment if you have enough i would still have a go at growing most veg.
i would plant a row of letuce a small row of radish and beetroot some cabbage in fact anything you fancy as the weather is so unpredictable we don't know if we are going to get a long or short season.
You might not have the greatest success but anything that does grow and some of it will might be a bit smaller but it will be very tasty.
I have even went to the super market and bought a bag of salad potatoes and planted them and i got a nice crop of potatoes which were the fine size for just giving them a wash and having them for our Christmas dinner so have a go plant what you like treat it as a learning curve and i am sure you will find it worth while i did. Good luck theres nothing like experimenting.
Ok will do thanks for the advice will give it a go cant wait. We been buying veg from a local farm such more taste. Cheers digger65
Hi Markymark
Just wanted to say we started at easter this year!!! Have been strugling with all sorts of problems such as the hill!! bind weed, docs and obviously the weather but I can only go at weekends and sometimes the odd day in the week but it is still well worth the work!!!!! We planted peas, cabbage, colli, brocolli, sprouts, sweetcorn cucumber tomatos, potatoes, runner beans, pumpkins and squashes, lettuce, herbs as well as strawberries, rsperries, Loganberries, rhubarb all of which are growing some better than others but its amazing to think that slowly but surely it is all coming together!!!!!
Taking on this allotment was definately a challenge but a great opportunity for us to grow and learn as a family let alone grow some lovely produce to eat!!!
Get stuck in and go for it!!!
For me its beetroot, Carrot , Parsnips and swede next!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
When you get into growing you will start to want to get better at what you do. I think the biggest thing to consider is setting out a plan for future years. IE get a crop rotation plan started now. You will not then need to reorganise later when you find out everthing is in the wrong place!! This is my second summer, made loads of mistakes last year but had great fun doing it!!
