dahlias

I have a lovely row of dahlias which have attracted hundreds of bees, but when i brave the bees and cut some flowers they don't last more than a day before the petals start to fall. I've tried putting them in a bucket of water as I cut them, and adding sugar and bleach to the vase water. this makes them last a little longer, but not much. What am I doing wrong?
Dusty.

petal drop on dahlias

Hi Dusty
There are one or two reasons why your flowers are not lasting more than a day
Ask yourself are the plants well watered and fed?
Always cut the flowers in the morning if possible and before they are fully open
If they are large dahlias it sometimes helps if you carefully turn the flower upside down and pour water into the hollow stem before putting in the vase.
Sorry the comment is late but I only just joined the forum.
Better luck next year
