Thanks.

Pruning figs

Hi You say this is a large fig tree I expect you are trying to control it, If its been planted direct in the ground there is no end to the growth, as they are best when the plant is restricted,in a pot or tub, but March is the best time before the fig gets into growth as they will bleed from the cuts you make. Cut out the older wood were posible , thinning out the crossing branches and shorten the laterals back but not to the old wood as you reduce your comming years fruit, rub out any fruit which is on the fig above thumb nail size,
Restricting the growth is possible by digging a trench around it about a metre away or closer , cutting through any roots you come across and bury something solid so the roots cant grow through, thick plastic or stand some slabs in the upright position around to make a container.
I have seen fig trees growing in cracks in bridges in Portugal in full fruit.
You can take cuttings also in March or can layer a shoot, cut half way through bury the cut piece in a pot leaving the shoot to protrude and place in the ground.
