Hi Newbi from West Sussex

Hi Newbi from West Sussex

HI there just introducing myself, Paul from West Sussex, just got a 15 rod plot, has had some work done but the previous owners gave up, loads of weeds and things to remove, just planning on getting it ready for next year.

Can i plant winter veg now or is it to late?

Paul

winter veg

No it's not to late there are still some winter veg you plant now.

hi, paul

my advice would be to prepare your ground for next spring, there are still loads of things you can plant but believe me there is nothing more disheartening than getting your plot and rushing, just getting things into the ground, and then after a few weeks seeing and living with your soil makes you realise it's foolhardy to just rush in. I picked my plot in march this year and was so excited to get it, we made beds and laid paths, only now I realise if we had really planned ahead and prepared the ground throughly, I wouldn't have lost so many things and we would have given ourselves time to sort things out.
You'll have to excuse me I do tend to waffle but what I mean to say is, I will have my plot from now{I'm 37} until I die so I'm sure I will have time to make amends for my foolhardy rushing in and I have had so much success that I feel priviledged to have an allotment, what I'm trying to say is go at your own pace, do what's best for you and learn from your mistakes and believe me some mistakes can be wonderful as I learnt when I found 2 cauliflower amongst my cabbage lol, I wish you the best of luck and I hope you find the peace, contentment and happiness that I have found on my plot.
Oh and one thing Slugs! the thing about slugs is, that you will realise how many there are REALLY over the next couple of months and I mean be afraid REALLY be afraid lol OH! and it rains a lot, more than you realised before lol

newbi from w. sussex

hi,
I'm also new joined today, also from w.sussex, on the coast.

Had a plot for a few years now and words fail me as to the enjoyment I get.
I totally agree with wellytobelly, only I will add a word of caution, when digging up weeds carefull not to remove the topsoil. It may just appear to be a pile of dirt, but topsoil is a delicate balance and you'll need to keep and maintain your topsoil, its what you'll grow your produce in.

good luck and enjoy.
