Introducing myself

my greenhouse

Hi, I'm liz,
I took on my allotment in march this year and had very little gardening experience before that, but what I lack in experience I more than make up for in enthusiasim and I have had a lot of success, probably dumb luck lol in fact we were nominated for best newcomer in our county competition, I was thrilled about that and it felt like I had already won just being nominated lol. I've also had a few catastrophes like losing every single cauliflower from my first sowing, I was gutted but with every cloud lol being so naive I mistakenly planted 2 caulis in with my cabbage and I screamed with excitement when I found 2 beautifully formed pure white baby caulies hiding between my huge cabbage, I was so pleased I'd made the mistake of not telling the difference between a cauli and a cabbage lol.
I even have four gorgegous melons fattening up nicely in my greenhouse between my aubergines and my cucumber.
My plot is in fact 2 plots that were overgrown and weed infested, my boyfriend, his sister and I took them on between us and after a lot of hard work our plot looks fantastic now, I have grown from seed almost every single flower, plant and vegetable on our plot, only things I haven't are the fruit trees and the pond plants.
Dawn and stephen made us a really beautiful pond as I was keen to have frogs because of all the slugs and frogs can obliterate the slug population in a matter of weeks, It really is beautiful.
I have photographs of my plot from the beginning and I find myself taking pictures everyday as things grow so quick, I swear you can hear melons growing! Anyway enough about me. Pleased to meet you!

Hello

Hi Liz,

Thats better, wellytobelly to much work for my poor fingers.
I joined this site only recently, have been reading your comments with great interest, am still working my way around the site, and you keep turning up with such detailed information, dont want to appear rude but I pictured you as some retired gentleman who perhaps should get out a little more often, but I have just read your introduction and was shocked to find out that you could not be more opposit to my preconception.

I was ellated to hear what you have acheived on your plot, I thought that I had done well, and got a little gutted for a bit, then it accerd to me that you have got the bug aswell, 3 years now for me, still got a way to go to ketchup with you, but isint it just fantastic, what a feeling, I done that! and you get to eat it, then there is even another wonderfull experiance.

And yes I also feel that I am the only one visiting, even with my short time here, perhaps I am the old git who should get out a little more.

Hi

Oh Rodney, you made me laugh out loud with your reply lol, I can honestly say I've never been mistaken for an elderly gentleman before lol, suffice to say I've just been bitten by the bug and am enjoying not only the practical, hands on side to allotmenteering but also the research and fact finding side lol.
I've faced so many challenges over the last 6 months, in fact everything nature can throw at us lol. It seems so much longer than 6 months, I feel like I have always had my allotment lol and I can't wait until next year to start all over again lol.
Due to the weather well mostly the rain I've decided not to over winter anything I'm just going to prepare for next spring and hope I have as much success as this year.

nice to meet you by the way

hello

Hi

Ive just found this site and love it!

Me and the hubby got our allotment/plot of overgrown weeds and stinging nettles at the end of May in Plymouth. I thought we was goin to be to late this year to get anything in there but started some seed at home of diff things. Peas, broad beans green beans, cabbage. Then got stuck in. Got totally addicted and spent all the time I could up there. From never doing any gardening in our life we have loved all of it.

Made a couple of raised beds to put in my 1st lot of seedlings and they have all done really well.
Have finally dug all the rest over now and filled the bottom half of allotment with potatoes (hopefully for our christmas dinner).

There was some disused land next to my allotment so asked if I could have it. Have made some raised beds in there, gonna move my strawberries and rasberries over there in the autumn i think.

Lost a few leeks leeks last week, they had what looked like a white poder on them and when I dug them up and inspected them more closely saw a maggoty thing. God I was upset, took it really personally, lol, I felt like a bad mother lol.

Any how enough rambling just wanted to say Hi, Im sure i will be asking loads of questions through this site. Its brill!

Welcome

Welcome to Down The Allotment Liz and great to hear from you. I'm jealous of your cauliflowers - nothing seems to be happening with mine.

I really like the picture you've posted - we hope to soon have a picture gallery facility for all members so keep them coming.

Why don't you start a group for your allotment and/or all the allotments in your area? That way you'll be able to keep in touch with other local allotmenteers for bartering, chat, and whatever else.
