Welcome to our allotment.
We are in the process of being taken over by our local parish council, previously we were run by Thanet District Coucil, there are a few issues still to sort out until this is finalised. [ probably in the new year.]
Our newly elected Site Rep is Tina and she is my good mate, our plots are next to each other, which is great! She really is inspirational and has got the council to release some of the funds it has been holding from the sale of a large allotment plot a couple of years ago [ sold for housing!!! ]. She got a petition signed by plot holders all over thanet to get a twin cubicle compost toilet built on our site and others also other things requested by different allotment plots. She is getting funding for a tea hut to be built. Also we are getting more water taps and they are going to fix the access road. They had put new fencing around so it has discouraged vandelism somewhat. Also they put a container in for everyones heavy plant, i.e. rotavators.
At the moment My plot is the general meeting place for everyone, which is loverly as she and I love to chat and swop idea's with all the older plot holders, it seems to have become more of a community since, with a lot of the older ones coming to have a chat and give advise, [ very often they contradict each other which is a bit confusing and quite funny] we have quite a few newbies joining our ranks so it's good for everyone to have a place to chat and ask questions, everyone that comes to my plot brings good advise, tea ,sugar, coffee and excess produce, or samples of things they have grown for us to try. Often we take our lunch up there and share with who ever turns up. It is a really nice way to learn and share experiencesand relax.
Next Year there are plans to hold competitions on site for best kept plot, maybe a scarecrow comp, and swop shop for produce and seeds, possibly a small shop for excess produce.
We did have a break in this year and the police were called, 18 sheds got broken into,a few strimmers and the like were taken but luckily not too much damage was caused. This was possibly because people were not locking the gate, a notice was put up and everyone seems to have bucked up thier idea's.
We get seaweed and compost delivered fairly regularly.
We also have some plots that haven't been worked this year so we will get that sorted out.
