Does anyone know of any rare or unusual salad-y things I can grow? I only ever grow lettuce that I can buy in shops, little gem mostly, rocket etc. I'd love to grow something a bit more unusual....

Looking forward to your replies, thanks.

salad leaf

Hello shovel
Nice to hear from you after such a long spell. mixed salad leaves or young spinach leaves are an ideal replacement for ordinary lettuce in salads. Chinese cabbage is also another good thing to grow.
I'll have a think about it because there are loads of alternatives to lettuce but quite frankly why anyone would want to replace a lettuce called SALADIN I don't know and one called VALDOR is excellent for growing over winter.
I'll get back to you so watch this space

PS how is the organic fertilizer coming along?

lettuce alternatives

Hello again shovel
Here are a few alternatives to ordinary lettuce
Leaf Beet, Land Cress, Corn Salad, Endive, Lollo Rossa (Red Lettuce) Pak Choi and as I said earlier Spinach. Hope you can find something to tickle your taste buds out of those few which are all easy to grow.
Happy gardening

Thanks

Thaks Lottyman,

I'll certainly give some of those ideas a try.

Actually I was just about to start trying out your suggestion for using nettles steeped in water to make organic fertiliser - there didn't seem to be any around in Feb when you suggested it. I'll also give the comfrey version a try.

Best,

Shovel.
