Hi everyone

Well I put my broad beans in a few weeks ago and covered it with a cloche, thing is I lifted cloche up this afternoon to see if anything was happening and there was some white furry mould on top of soil. Is this normal?

Cheers Karen

Mould on soil

Hi Karen
I don't think its a good idea to cover autumn sown broad beans with clotches it is far better to cover them with hooped plastic pipe with net thrown over to keep off pidgeons and pheasants etc. After a few weeks the beans will shoot through the soil and all you need to do then is keep disturbing the top soil with a small cultivator or hoe. Broad beans need no protection in winter except from wind
It is natural for the top soil to have a green mould on in winter thats why you should keep the hoe moving whenever conditions allow

Thanks algynon, will go and remove cloche tomorrow - aslong as its not water logged down allotment. The rain down here (Plymouth) is mad.

See You
