Hello to everyone, I'm new on here & new to growing my own veg, I can't wait to get started.

I will be getting a new allotment plot of 128msq next month which I am very excited about so once I have tested the soil & checked all the drainage I should be ready to start planting early spring, hopefully!

I want to grow organically so I was wondering if anyone had any tried & tested advice on what I can plant to deter certain bugs & ract predators or any other methods of getting rid of pests, the more humane the better.

Are certain pests more numerous than others or cause more damage?

Can't wait to hear from you. :)

caterpiller can do alot of

caterpiller can do alot of damage so I use scaffording net to cover my cabbbage, broccoli and sprouts it was a really help last year where as the year before I was over taken by caterpillers this also helps with the pigeons they love newly planted crops. slugs shouldn`t be a problem if you keep all your crops free from weeds, they love ground cover so the less around the better. hope I`ve been alittle help.

hi juliej

well as a plot holder on knowles rd allotments,iv been working my plot along side my sons who all so has a plot 2 up from me,well there are a few pests, start with rodents,if you have a shed watch for mice/rats over winter they love a warm shed, humain traps work ok but the blighters keep coming back,if your going organic, you will have the normal pests slugs/snails hate egg shells around your crops, but the best iv found for most other pest is enviromesh, cover with it will keep most things off, used it lasy year had a good crop of potatoes, caulie, beetroots carrots, and all did well,peas/beans if i saw any pest a spray of washing up liquid/water mixture works great,it works on most brassica plants.
hope the hints help,i got most from other allotment holders, one thing befor i go,the organic way of keeping weeds down is 50/50 alcahol, one spray in normally enough if not a second spray will finish them off,you can make your own from a kit from any wine making shops good one near penneycomquike.its all organic friendly.

companion planting

Companion planting works well for me. I grow marigolds next to my tomatoes as they give off a strong odour that repels greenfly and blackfly.

I also plant nasturtiums alongside cabbages. Caterpillars love them so they head straight for them and leave the cabbages alone.

There are loads of other companion planting ideas apparently, but those ones work best for me.

Gammy Leg!!!

Hi all, I'm Steve on plot 15. Been there since the start and thought I was ticking along nicely although seem to be doing more weeding than growing. Haven't been able to get down for 5 weeks now with a gammy leg and I know there's lots to do and harvest. I'll try and get down next week for a look but can't do much have to rustle up my kids for a day out.
If my shed has been busted again (4) can someone patch it and let me know via the commitee or email stephsan47@googlemail.com. Cheers see you soon
