Hi!
I am new to this website... and new to having an allotment! In fact, I got mine this morning!

A truly lovely site covered in brambles and weeds! I have a lot to do getting the site to a much more manageable state, but in the meantime, what should I consider planting that doesn't mind a few old weeds so I feel productive this year?

Hi there! Brambles are the absolute pits - you really need to dig down to get the roots out. Sometimes you'll find they have travelled anything upto 10 feet underground from another plant! If I was you, I would plan to work on half your plot at a time, to give yourself time to get something in for early summer crops and plan to get the other half ready in time for your later and winter crops.
I think potatoes and runner beans are both quick and rewarding to grow on a new plot.

Spuds and cabbages!

Also, try cutting down the worst weeds and taking out the brambles, then covering up some if your plot with weed control fabric or black pastic for a few months, then it will all die back and you can dig it

have fun!

Hi there, am new to this as

Hi there, am new to this as well! Am fortunate though, as my allotment has been worked for a good few years. We do have an allotment next to us which is sooooooooo overgrown, Russell my hubby has been trying to cut back as much as possible as we don't want the seeds and weeds coming over to us, which I know is impossible to stop! All the best, just do an hour at a time, as digging can be back breaking, so pace yourself!

Clearing your plot

B&Q have an offer on for large tarps and light excluding fabric at the moment (hopefully not my local B&Q only), I got some to cover a third of my plot. As it's my first year have decided to take others advice and only tackle a section (only 2/3 at the moment), so i can get that completed properly i.e dug over and cleared, while i am sill learning. It has meant that the task of clearing the rest is not as daunting and that the section that is covered won't get out of contol while i leave it. Don't know if this helps you, but thought i would mention that it is going cheap.
