Planting raspberries
Can anybody tell me if it is too late to plant rasberries now? I've got a book that says the best time is October. Is that right?
Also I'm not really sure what bare-rooted canes are - is that better than in a pot?
Any other tips for a complete novice!
Thanks for your help.
hi pat,in answer to yr queery bare root is a plant with no soil on it its that easy u get rasp canes like that just put them straight into the ground ,thats it .really they should have been in now but it wont make much difference if you plant them over the next couple of weeks, i have been digging my plot over this morning to replant some gooseberry bushes and dug up some rasp roots from lthis this yrs crop which were still putting out some new shoots so i started a new row with them and i expect them to survive with no prob,s hope this helps ,regards bob
Hi Pat, late answer but Raspberries can still be planted this includes summer and autumn fruiting varieties and can be done up till the end of March, were most nurseries supply them potted up, cheaper to buy as bare root now, but will need planting as soon as possible, but ones potted can wait till you are ready.
there are lots of varieties some without the spines, like JOAN J and has a long fruiting period covering summer and autumn, If growing on the patio in pots a good variety to try is TULAMEEN is also a double cropping variety.
