poor aspagus shoots
we have a 4 year old bed that should give us a good crop but all we get are pencil thick shoots any help would be good please
Hello Huwnik
There could be a few reasons why you have only got thin spears. You don't say what you did with the asparagus last year
about mid June last year you should have stopped cutting then let the spears develope into into the bushy ferns. When they turn yellow cut them off about 2ins from ground level. At the beginning of the year you should have applied general purpose fertilizer 2-4ozs per yard run. Ridge the rows up like potatoes and keep watered in dry weather. Only cut till mid June then let the ferns develope and turn yellow to build strength into the plant ready for next year.
Don't forget to keep the bed weed free at all times
Happy gardening
