Hi This is my first year as an allotementeer...and am on a giant learning curve....I was wondering if anyone can help me ...........I have just picked my first crop of radish and besides the leaves having lots of holes in them the radishes themselves have little brown lines on them as though something has burrowed into the skin....Does anyone know what this is and how to get rid of whatever it is????
I am about to try and sow some more and dont want a repeat performance...

Bye the way i am loving my allotment...a lot of work.....but great...

Thanks
Carol

Radishes

Problem probably caused by Flea Beetle - attacks are worse when soil is dry so keep well watered. Alan Tichmarsh answer to the problem is to stand some chunkks of rotting logs around the crop , adult beetles (small brown & buff striped beetles that jump like fleas) often gather underneath by day and can be collected up.
Hope this helps - best of luck with your allotment.

radish

Hi
I get flea beetles on my radishes too, leaves are all turned to lace, so I agree with the other comment here, that is probably what is causing the holes in your leaves. Holes on the radishes are often caused by slugs. This year my radishes were also eaten by pigeons, leaves stripped to stalks so are now under nets. Nothing is ever easy is it?

Good luck trying to round up flea beetles, they are nigh-on impossible to spot until they jump and then you've missed 'em! I have tried an organic pyrethum insecticide but without much success, not much else will work unless you want to use chemical bug killers but if you're like me you won't want that on your food. The organic slug pellets by Growing Success seem good though.

So, my best advice is to put up with the little holes and try not to worry too much, as it doesn't seem to stop them growing and the radishes should still taste as good once you've cleaned them up.

Radish

A simple way to grow good clean radish is to make a simple frame that will hold 2 grow-bags. lay the frame on the soil sprinkle slug pellets then lay the grow-bags on top cut the top off the grow-bags set radish in ONE OF THEM then 3 weeks later sow radish in the other one When the first bag is used set again keep the bags moist but not soggy wet cover the frame with enviro mesh and in that small frame its possible to have radish from March to October
Another type of radish which will grow in the open garden is Mooli it is white grows about 12 inches long and is excellent sliced up in salads.Mooli should not be planted till July
