Raspberry canes
I put in some Summer and Autumn raspberry canes last October and only a few are starting to shoot from the bottom.....about 3 ins growth so far.....some others have buds on the canes but no base growth.
I fed them with growmore last week and water them quite often am I expecting too much too early.
Thanks
Dave
hi dave ,the shoots you can see now will be yr summer fruit the autumn one,s will follow soon after ,i dug up and moved one of my rows earlier this spring ( beginning of march as they were too close together and moved it to my second plot .they are now about 6/8 inches high and looking great and are a fantastic tasting fruit ( joan j ) im looking forward to a great crop this year as they are in their second year ,hope you have a good crop too regards bob
you will get lots of runners from last years canes poppint up everywhere, you have to keep them under control,,,,mine were there when i took my plot on ,have a good load of them..with plenty of fruit last year
i have jut got an allotment and there are loads of raspberry trees to many infact that are really close together the plot has been left for some time and is totally over grown i was just wondering how i go about choosing which ones i should keep and which i should get rid of and is there a certain time of year to move them
hi, you sound like you have the same problem i had when i started, well first we have two kinds summer and autumn anything that flowers in the next couple of months will b summer fruit later ones are autumn, but if you can find out how long they have been there you can get organised, if they are years old you could have all kinds of probs, and its better to renew every year by cutting down to 6 inches after the fruit has finished so i would clear everything out at seasons end and start with a new supply.last year i did the same and bought some new ones called (joan j ) from thompson & morgan, the were large and a beautifull taste.also a supply of autumn bliss , same result but a bit too heavy on thorns .
one bit of info would be dont dig ( fork or spade ) near the base as all the roots fan out just below the surface not downwards its a hands and knees weeding session hope this helps out, happy gardening, bob
