Scarecrows, Pumpkins and Sunflowers
No plot for kids would be complete without Scarecrows, pumpkins and sunflowers. Does anyone have experiences to share for the group around making a scarecrow or growing big pumpkins? Or how about tales of how you keep your kids amused on the plot. I usually have to take some or all of my kids with me and need some advise on how to keep them amused.

june Posted at 12:22 on Thu, 09/25/2008Scarecrows are the easiest things to make you will need an old jumper, trousers and some straw. Stuff all these out to resemble legs, arms and body then tie the ends up with some string. Join the jumper to the trousers. Make a hole in the crutch of the trousers and push a wooden pole up through the middle then through the middle of the jumper and out the top. Then make a head you could do this with a pair of old tights cut of the legs tie a knot in the body and stuff with straw. This should keep the kids quite for a couple of hours while they are making it.
You could give them a piece of ground and ask them to choose what they would like to grow, let them sow and water and they will take much more interest as it is growing.
I give my pumpkin plenty of water and a liquid feed of seaweed fertilizer.
I hope I have been some help.

mike_green_fingers Posted at 22:13 on Thu, 10/16/2008Have you got a pond area on your allotment??
we have only recently got our plot and our daughter is really wanting a pond so we are going to get an old baby bath or something similar so she can have that and look at all the wildlife there is there.
keeping children amused...
gigglyanna Posted at 16:19 on Wed, 12/03/2008I have a nearly 6 year old boy and a just 4 year old girl - I was given an old plastic wendy house to stick in a corner and my children like having picnics in there... or climbing on the roof. I always take food with me for snacks. Another time there was a load of tree stumps dropped off at the allotment and I took some of those for a little ring of seats... I am fortunate enough to have an apple tree on the plot and there is nothing they like more than climbing up it to watch me work. I havn't had too much success getting them interested in planting things or even digging up things to eat which leaves just me hopping about with excitement when I find potatoes! They do like wielding dangerous tools about though so my next plan is to get some children size ones so they can get stuck in - any recommendations? One time my daughter was bored so we took time out to lie down on the weed matting to watch the clouds and see what shapes they formed - not much digging done that day..but it was very nice! I hope that the whole planting thing will grow on them in time but at the moment I settle for them enjoying being there. I like the idea of building a scarecrow - will give that a go.
