Some help please
I am new to the website and i got my plot about 1 1/2 years ago. I am still working at clearing bits as alot of it was left to grass, which to make it easier for me i mowed last year.
But this year i am up for it.
My 6 year old loves helping sometimes its picking the dandelion flowers, or just pottering about the plot with mummy. The reason for my help request is that i have 3 year old twins (girl and boy) One loves being mucky the other hates it.
Both are easily distracted and dissapear down the other plots very quickly. (A bit of an advnture.)
Can you help with things i could do with them (They will be 4 in easter)
We used to pay our young ones 1p per slug to keep them amused for a bit.
good luck ely
Hi Hellsbells
One suggestion if you have enough space is to create a secret garden area just for them, grassed areas are perfect, beg borrow or otherwise get hold of a pop up tent or old clothes airers and sheets with pegs to hold them on and build them a den, your 6yr old will be a great help and full of ideas once you get started. If they still have an afternoon nap then aim to get to the allotment for their natural nap time and read to them in their den to chill them out and hopefully they will sleep and you'll get some childfree time to get on.
Bug collecting kits are quite good, get the one who likes to stay clean some gloves so they don't have to get dirty hands. A small sandpit always works for a bit and growing cress in shapes or letters which they plant one week and are usually up by the next week get them more into the growing side of things in summer.
Picnics and little bbqs as treats when they've been busy for a few hours make going to the allotment more of a treat. Watering is always good fun especially with a small watering can because it can take up lots of time and is useful to you whilst you get on with something else.
Always remember they're only little and its your passion not theirs so don't expect to get too much done and then no one gets frustrated or feels neglected. If possible and you don't live too far away visit more frequently for shorter periods of time.
I hope this helps a bit and hopefully loads of other folks will have even more ideas to make it fun for the whole family.
Best wishes
Nicci
Hi, Im new to all this too. Got my plot last Feb, and me and my 8yr old daughter absolutely love it. I planted a square of grass so when the kids come up to help, they have their own little bit to play on. I have an easle for them to paint if they get bored, water guns for the summer, a tent for sheltering from the sun on hot days, just like a cool den. She also helps me with watering the plants, keeps a look out for the fox, butterflies and beasties. She makes lovely mud pies. Also, when bored, we go for a lovely walk up the law for a change of scenery. Hope this helps..
I have two sons 3 and 6 year old. H ave let them choose some seeds to plant and set aside area for them to grow their seeds and dig with their bucket and spade. have great fun looking for insects and watering there ground does get a bit muddy at times so need to make sure have spare set of clothes! have also invested in little tyke construction vehicles from local car bootie -my boys loving playing with these good luck
