What to do

speedway's picture

I have had my half plot since March, but due to bad weather and ill health haven't been able to do much, the piece i cleared have planted with beetroot, carrots ( not a great success), lettuce, spinach, peas, shallots and new potatoes. Oh and my french breakfast raddishs that ended up looking like sweet potatoes. But now i have 2 thirds of an allotment covered in weeds, which i have been skimming off with a shovel and then rough digging. Is this the best way to go or should i be doing something different? Also what can be planted now?

What to do

Hi Speedway,
Weeds will allways grow, therefor dig the weeds in and cover with thick black plastic sheeting untill you feel fit enough to tackle a small area at a time.

Prepare a bed for broad beans, easy to grow, will over winter. plant November
Also same for garlic and onoin sets.

Cheers,
rodney

Welcome

Hi Speedway,

I had the same problem when I first got my plot and then became ill for ages and couldn't work it. Hope you're better now.

Your digging method sounds pretty good to me but why don't you ask questions in the forum - a lot more people will look there and you're bound to get lots of answers.

Good luck with it all.

thanks

thanks for your reply will put something on the forum

Hi

Once you have finished digging it over cover it with tarporleens or sheeting to keep the weeds down until your ready to plant. Works for us anyway!

weeds

thanks for your reply, i'm a bit confused as one of the gentlemen at the site has told me that putting plastic down is a waste of time as the weeds still grow underneath, but i have decided to go with you and have purchased 2 rolls of weed control fabric and am going to lay it this afternoon.
