Winter Planting
Hi everybody, i am quite new to growing veg, started in april, and have had varied success with onions, garlic, carrots, parsnips and broccoli (although i had huge caterpillar problems and didn't eat the broccoli fast enough). Anyway, i am about to pull up the last of my carrots, and probably parsnips, and i was wandering what, if anything was right for planting now, or should i be waiting for spring, i couldnt find any seeds that said they were right for planting at this time. someone said onions from seed needed to be planted in winter, should this be inside or out? Thanks for your help in advance. Cheers. James.
oops, i just found a very similar thread, sorry bout that. Cheers. James.
Hi James like you i'm new aswell, i got my allotment in feb, Potatoes i grew this year for the first time & i had loads i have stored them in my shed i tried pasnips but wasn't successfull with them but will try next year, the broccoli i grew was a good, i did make up a garlic potion which kept the white butterfly away, if you want the recipe give me a shout you can plant out Broad Beans & Peas, some say cover with clotches but i haven't and mine seem to be fine.
happy gardening Barb
Get some broad bean seed and set in 3" pots in a cold greenhouse or frame and plant out in rows after hardening off about Feb/March read the packet to make sure you get the correct variety for overwintering Aquadulce Claudia is one of the best. Overwintering onions should be in by now so get some heat treated sets for planting about March depending on weather conditions and the state of the soil. They too can be started off in a cold greenhouse or frame If you buy a January issue of a good garden magazine (KITCHEN GARDEN) It will be out the first thursday in DECEMBER and in there it will tell you what to plant and when.
There is not much you can grw outside but what you can do is start preparing, you can sow sring onion seeds now and as soon as the soil becomes warmer in spring, they will germinate so you will have really early spring onions. The other suggestion is to make a hot box. Siply make a box with a glass lid and fill it with manure. As the manure decomposes heat is let off, this means you can recreate spring conditions in the middle of winter and start growing your favourite vegetables.
Hi all that are new to growing fruit and veg.
Click on the Forum, there under the adds section you will see there is a calendar for sale called 'grow your own.'
It is all you will need it tells you what to sow how to sow and so fourth.
It will work out much cheaper then buying gardening magazines and will also look good on your wall as there are some nice pictures.
